Translating for Human Rights: International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

22 years ago, the not-for-profit organisation Peace One Day established an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence.

This is now known as Peace Day, celebrated on 21 September each year and observed by the United Nations.

Now, Peace One Day is sharpening its focus on anti-racism as a key driver towards a more peaceful and just world.

This culminates in a live, digital experience streamed across the world for International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March.

To raise awareness, facilitate conversations, and set out action points for engaging with anti-racism, this event will feature thinkers, activists and artists from around the world.

What is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination?

On 21 March 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at peaceful demonstrations in Sharpeville, South Africa. The protestors were speaking out against apartheid laws.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination six years later, calling for the global community to say no to racism.

The Day commemorates the lives of those who died to fight for human rights, and empowers people around the world to fight racism.
